Lena Dunham making strides for girls in the media

With the rise in popularity of her show, “Girls” on HBO, Lena Dunham’s name has quickly come into the entertainment canon. Her wit, excellent writing and fearless acting have all stolen our hearts and has allowed her to make strides in the entertainment industry though she doesn’t exactly fit the stereotypical mold physically.

I’ve been so excited to watch her fame rise and her feet remain firmly planted on the floor of reality as she makes strides for girls in one of the toughest markets we face.

But, of course, she can’t just be brilliant and fun and beautiful and that be the end of it – she has to hide her body so we don’t address that she’s not perfect. This wasn’t an issue until she showed up to a charity event in a short dress. The headlines began piling up almost instantly about Lena “forgetting her pants” for the event. How cruel and fickle the media can be!

In an article on Forbes.com, Dina Gachman says the following,

“After seeing the melodramatic headlines that made it sound like Dunham had lost her mind, gone off the deep end, and wandered out of the house on the day of the event without pants like some lunatic in the midst of a manic episode, I saw the picture of her outfit and laughed. OK, so she’s showing a lot of skin but she looks cute. I’ve seen more skin on the likes of Christina Aguilera, Madonna, or J. Lo so what’s the big deal about Dunham’s outfit? She’s showing some leg. Is that scandalous? Is it because her legs aren’t identical to the gams on Cameron Diaz orAngelina Jolie? It’s not offensive that she looks a little naked. It’s offensive that people seem so… upset.

It’s more upsetting to me, as a woman, to see Katy Perry shoot whipped cream out of her bra and act like a four-year old child than it is to see a talented, intelligent woman embrace her body and not care what people may think. Maybe her outfit wasn’t the year’s best fashion choice, but I like to think maybe she was messing with us when picking that outfit. Maybe she wanted to provoke and amuse. Or maybe she just thought it was cute.

Whatever the reason, it’s ridiculous that people think that seeing her legs in all their glory is “too real.” Have you seen her show? She’s naked all the time. What, do people prefer airbrushed, tweaked, and totally fake images of female bodies? Don’t answer that. I think Lena Dunham looked just fine in her little ensemble. So please, stop telling her to put pants on. It’s insulting.”

I agree, Dina. You rock that short dress, Lena!
