State of Miami University Girls

The Women’s Advocacy Group at Miami University was founded with the goal of shaping the student culture in a way that, over time, reduces the incidence of sexual assault and disordered eating at Miami and warms the climate for Miami’s female students. The group commissioned a study in fall of 2003 to determine the undergraduate perspective on the climate for women students at Miami. You can read more about the study here, but you will find the results of the study below.

A total of 59 participants participated in seven diverse focus groups that came to the following conclusions.
At Miami there is/are:
• Pressure to conform to rigid physical images and material possessions
• Inability to achieve desired images, leading to depression, eating disorders, low self-esteem and risky health behaviors
• Gender discrimination, voicelessness in the classroom and reluctance to assume leadership
• Safety concerns
